Last month (click Here) we talked about how to be resilient.
In this November table talk we speak about how to plan succession.
Firstly let me find out what it means:
“Succession planning is the process of identifying and developing potential candidates to fill visionary critical leadership and key positions within an organisation to ensure continuity and growth.”
Succession planning is also a biblical concept, for instance look at the transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua, Elijah to Elisha, and David to Solomon.
Another example is Jesus’s intentional preparation of the twelve disciples to carry on his work. These examples demonstrate the importance of identifying, mentoring, and publicly commissioning successors to ensure continuity in leadership.
Kaapsche Hollandsche; the Exclusive Designer Homeware Collection brand has reached the five year benchmark.
We may have to think about these questions of succession.
What is our brand ‘s planning and who will be leading this?
My take on this: One should treat succession planning as a continuous process, not a one-time event.
The ultimate goal is to create a “talent pipeline” that ensures the brand/ business can continue to function smoothly when a key role becomes vacant due to promotion, retirement, or unexpected departure.
Important question therefore is how are you building?
Do you built around a person or a collective?
Are you replacing the role or the individual?
A common mistake in succession planning is focusing too much on replacing the individual.
We are to look for fresh perspectives and innovation. Not a replica of the current role holder.
Times change and so do organisations, families and brands. The challenge is to know the times and to know when to prepare for succession.
In our case we have found a successor who is going to take the baton and run.
That is a bitter sweet moment. I am grateful for the opportunity to birth and wean Kaapsche Hollandsche from zero to five!
Now it is time for Kaapsche Hollandsche to venture out in new territories and with that a new jockey comes to the scene.
